Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q890 TruBrite 18.4-Inch Laptop (Black/Red) Review
My husband and I bought this to replace an aging laptop, and we've had it about 2 weeks now. The other reviewers aren't kidding when they say this thing is a FREAKING BEAST. We had a 17" laptop and I was very surprised at how much bigger all around this one is-- longer and wider. Flawless performance, he is using this as a gaming laptop and is loving it-- benchmarks of 20 to 30 FPS for most games is right on the mark. IT DOES GET HOT, but with the screaming graphics card and processor that's packed in here, I'm totally not surprised and was expecting this. If you're surprised by how warm this gets, you don't know much about gaming laptops. The fans do a great job of cooling it, and they are not super loud. The speakers are great, the "surround sound" effect it has is very cool for games & movies. Love the backlit keyboard and media buttons on the left side. The blu-ray player is very impressive, and the screen resolution really makes everything pop. Love the SSD, but it fills up fast-- Windows 7 takes up a lot of room (at least half of the drive before you install anything else). But with the dual HDD drive, you can install other programs and it runs just as fast. He installed Civil 3D (a CAD software), and it actually runs better than on his desktop at work! He also installed Visual Studio 2010 and Office 2010 and it runs everything screaming, screaming fast. This laptop has features out the wazoo for the price. I'd put it toe to toe with any Alienware computer and not break a sweat. It is very heavy, but we knew that before we bought it. Definitely not portable, it's basically a desktop replacement. If you're looking for a lightweight easily portable laptop, you're definitely looking at the wrong one! But if you're looking for a real powerhouse that can handle any game or software you throw at it, then this is the one for you. I was going to order one for myself, but given the weight of it, I think I'm going to go with the Asus G73JW. Similar features but a little smaller and a lot lighter.
