Powerful New Microarchitecture Eliminates Slowdown
The i7 family is Intel's flagship processor, and for good reason. With the i7 family, Intel engineers invented a revolutionary new style of microarchitecture. They replaced the front side bus--a longtime staple of processor design--with a new technology called QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). Using QPI, the Intel Core i7 980X processor increases bandwidth and lowers latency, while achieving data transfer speeds as high as 25.6 GB/s.

To put it simply, users will enjoy faster and more streamlined processing than ever before. Your computer will handle multiple projects and applications without the slowdown you'd experience with a lesser processor.

New Technologies Boost Performance
The Intel Core i7 980X processor Extreme Edition also makes use of several other cutting-edge technologies:

  • Turbo Boost Technology allows the processor to automatically boost base clock speed of 3.33GHz to a maximum single-core frequency of 3.60GHz when it's operating below power/thermal limits.
  • Hyper-threading Technology enables more efficient use of processor resources byallowing each core to work on two tasks at the same time. This 12 way multi-tasking makes the most of highly threaded software like media players and next-generation games.
  • Smart Cache Memory increases available RAM resources, leading to less lag while multi-tasking.
Overclocker Friendly1
Built to be tweaked and pushed to the limits, Intel Core i7 980X processor Extreme Edition features an unlocked core making it easier to overclock. For performance enthusiasts looking to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of their hardware, Intel DX58SO Extreme Series Desktop Boards provide a stable foundation for a benchmark-shattering system.

Intel Core i7 Processor i7-930 2.80GHz 8 MB LGA1366 CPU, Retail BX80601930

Intel Core i7 Processor i7-930 2.80GHz 8 MB LGA1366 CPU, Retail BX80601930 Review

Here are my current settings for this chip

intel core i7-930
CPU speed 3.8 ghz
bclock: 190mhz
CPU multiplier: 20
turbo: enabled
ht: enabled
vCore 1.15v (a pretty normal value, can go as high as 1.4 pretty safely). I'm still in the process of lowering this and testing for stability.
CPU PPL 1.84v (norm is 1.800 and the safe max is 1.880)

QPI/uncore: 1.35v (1.35 is the safe max)
DRAM: 1.65v (1.65 is the safe max)

IOH core 1.2v (norm is 1.1 safe max is around 1.3 depending on your motherboard)
IOC core 1.0v (norm is 1.1 safe max is around 1.3 depending on motherboard)

Note in overclocking the core i7 the QPI voltage is pretty much the most important value to raise. In fact some motherboards will raise this and the DRAM voltage (it needs to be raised for DDR3-1666) automatically (on my gigabyte x58-udr3 this is known as "extreme memory mode"). You actually don't need to raise vCore that much (I see lots of posts on the internet with people running them ~1.35v). In fact the best way to overclock this processor is to first turn down the multiplier all the way (so the chip is running at like 1.6ghz). Turn up the bClock to 190 or 200 (whatever (make sure you turn down the DRAM multiplier too!) you are going for and find the voltages you need for QPI/uncore, DRAM, IOH and IOC. Once that is stable, then start bumping up the CPU multiplier and the vCore voltage as needed. I did get mine up to 4.4ghz, stable, but decided the fans were too loud at that setting.

With these settings my CPU never gets over 70C (the set point for my motherboard fan control) and the fan is still not too loud. At idle it stays at 54C, but is completely silent (I have the heat-sink fans being controlled by the motherboard). Note anything up to 85 is probably perfectly fine for a core i7, though 70 is a good target.

edit: it actually got cooler. I never believed the whole "artic silver needs to cure" line, but this CPU is now running 40C idle (and silent) and 65C full-load (slightly noisier).

Using QPI, the Intel Core i7-930 processor achieves unprecedented levels of bandwidth, and can use its four computing cores to their maximum potential.

To put it simply, users will enjoy faster and more streamlined processing than ever before. Your computer will handle multiple projects and applications without the slowdown you'd experience with a lesser processor.

Extremely intensive programs like high-definition media editors will run more smoothly and responsively. And you'll be able to experience next-generation games without frame-rate hiccups and slowdowns.

New Technologies Boost Performance
The Intel Core i7-930 processor also makes use of several other cutting-edge technologies:

  • Turbo Boost Technology allows the processor to run up to 133 MHz faster when it's operating below power/thermal limits.

Media Editing and Sharing Easier than Ever
Whether editing high-definition videos, touching up family photos, or splicing up music, the Intel Core i7-960 processor provides the processing power needed. The processor's four cores are optimized to keep up with the most advanced digital editing software. It also accelerates DVD encoding and compression, allowing you to easily share your HD home videos with everyone.

Unparalleled Gaming Performance
With the advent of next-generation games, PC gaming is more immersive than ever. The latest games take advantage of multi-threaded programming, allowing for more realistic graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence (AI). But you need more than just a good graphics card with high GPU output to fully experience all these effects. Underlying the visual realism and advanced AI scripts are thousands of high-speed calculations that your CPU must process.

Fortunately, the Intel Core i7-930 processor is specifically designed to handle these calculations. Using multi-thread architecture, it has the ability to process thousands of graphical characteristics at once, resulting in a smooth and lag-free experience. Intel worked closely with CryTek -- the developers of the advanced game engine behind such games as Crysis and Far Cry -- to guarantee that gamers have an immersive and lifelike experience.

The Intel Core i7-930 processor is backed by a three-year limited warranty.
